The director can be thought of as a conductor. This is especially true when they are producing a live show.

The director doesn't actually operate any equipment, but nothing occurs without directoral commands.

A director will speak to every member of the production team for almost every new element in a show.

The director tells the floor director which talent to cue, the camera operator what to shoot, the tape operator what to cue, the graphics operator what graphics to use, the audio engineer which audio source is on, and the technical director what shot is next to be aired.
