Research Interests:
Dr. Allen's research interests fall into three broad categories: law, ethics, and journalism. He approaches most research from a critical theory perspective and is guided by the work of Jurgen Habermas.

Dr Allen is particularly interested in the relationship between media law and media ethics, especially as it impacts journalism and the formation of an active, functioning public sphere. His research tends to be qualitative or philosophical in nature.

Teaching Interests:
Among the courses Dr. Allen has taught are Freedom of Speech and Press, Regulation of the Communication Industry, Mass Communication Ethics, and other media criticism courses.
